Rate Dining: Tusker House Character Breakfast

Location: Animal Kingdom (Africa)
Type:  Table Service
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Cuisine:  American with a touch of African (likely more African at Lunch and Dinner)
Reservations:   Yes (recommended)
Characters:  Currently only for Breakfast, Lunch added later this year

The Tusker House, previously a counter service location, currently offers a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.   One of the more popular meals is the character breakfast, “Donald’s Safari Breakfast”.   The breakfast includes characters meets with Donald, Goofy, Mickey, and Daisy (subject to change of course) along with a buffet of Mickey waffles, scrambled eggs, ham and flavorful dishes with an African influence.

Mark your calendars; Tusker House will soon be adding Donald’s Safari Lunch (December 4, 2011) which will be a new character dining experience for Animal Kingdom. No changes will be made in the buffet at this time.

Our review will concentrate on the Safari Breakfast, the only meal we have experienced at the Tusker House.

Welcome to Tusker House!   Smile for your picture.   Now shove that food down your throat and get out.

Atmosphere
Once your name is called you will be ushered into a line where you’ll wait to get your family’s picture with Donald.   After you get your picture you’ll be seated.   TIP:  Be sure to ask to have a cast member take a picture with your camera as the pictures offered while you eat will cost over $30.

Similar to other character style buffets,  this buffet is a bit loud and feels incredibly rushed.   The building is not as unique as other buildings on property but does have some cultural flair to help you feel as though you are in an African Village.    Be sure to look up at the ceiling as you grab your food from the buffet.

The buffet is free flowing, meaning there is supposedly no line.   This seems to cause confusion even though cast members mention it over and over.   So if you go, remember, don’t line up, just get the food you want and smile at the people giving you dirty looks.

Food

Food is average buffet food, nothing spectacular and, not as good as some of the other breakfast buffets on property including the Supercalifragilistics Breakfast at 1900 Park Fare.   But if you like Mickey Waffles, scrambled eggs, and sausage you’ll do fine.   Be sure to try the Jungle Juice as it’s one of the best parts of the meal. As you sit, you’ll be visited by Mickey, Goofy and Daisy who will quickly sign your book, take a picture and be on their way. There’s also a parade in which children can line up behind their favorite characters and dance along to African music.

Tip:  If the park opens at 9 be sure to make an early reservation to the Tusker House.   This will allow you to get into the park a little early and snap some great photo’s with few people on your way to the restaurant.   You are not allowed to roam the park, but you do have a view of the tree of life and other nice spots on your way.

Our Rating is 2.5/5

Rating Reason:  There is a certain aura of anxiety when dining with characters at Disney restaurants. Even when the servers are as kind as can be, you know they want you out as soon as possible so they can get the next gazillion people in to eat. It’s usually not a problem, but at no other restaurant have we felt more rushed than Tusker House. Maybe it’s because we schedule an early breakfast, so they are just trying to get all guests in and the process flowing, but it often leads to an aggravating meal.    Donald no longer comes to the tables, so getting his autograph can be a problem. And of course there’s always the pressure of buying that expensive photo.

Overall, the food is decent and it provides a good fill up at the park before your day begins.    Also, if you get in before park opens you are right at the entrance to the Safari to begin your tour of Animal Kingdom and eating with characters is always easier than standing in character lines in the hot Florida sun.  But because of the frantic pace, you might end up feeling overly rushed.

Rate Dining: Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater

LocationHollywood Studios
Type:  Table Service
Meals:  Lunch and Dinner
Cuisine:   American (Known for their hamburgers, milkshakes and desserts)
Reservations:  Yes (recommended)

With the number of drive in theaters dwindling, most of our kids have missed their chance to experience one.   Well, now is their chance and you don’t have to wait for night fall or hide people in the trunk to save on entrance fees.   Welcome to Disney’s Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater.

Atmosphere
The atmosphere is fun and unique compared to other restaurants.   The dining area allows you to sit under the stars in your 50’s era car or at a picnic table while watching clips from old science fiction movies and cartoons.   Note that it is clips of movies and not an entire movie.   The clip reel is not that long, so you will see the same set of clips a few times throughout your meal.  Not only is it dark (representing nighttime), making it a bit difficult to see the menu and your food, but with movie clips playing it can also get loud.    The cars are either 2 or 3 seats which seats 4 to 6 adults, which means if you do not fill your car you will be seated with others.

 Food
Food is American fare which range from steak to sandwiches with a couple pasta dishes thrown in.   Overall food is average and a bit overpriced so stick to the burger or chicken sandwiches.  Many people go just for the desserts (sundaes and milkshakes) so you get the feeling of the atmosphere and don’t have to sit through too many movie clips.

  Rating 3 / 5
Rating Comments:   Atmosphere is the reason to go.  Children love to sit in the cars and watching the movies.   But the movie clips repeat, which can lead to a little boredom, and the food is average.  Let me know what you would rate it, use the poll on the right side of the page.

Rate Dining: The Garden Grill

LocationEpcot, Future World (Upstairs in the Land Pavilion)
Type: Table Service (Character:  Farmer Mickey, Pluto, & Chip ‘n’ Dale)
Meals: Dinner
Cuisine:  American
Reservations: Yes (recommended)

How many times have you entered the Land Pavilion just to rush to get on Soarin and didn’t noticed the dining possibilities?   Well, next time how about going on a ride without waiting in a long line and getting a meal to go along with it?   Try dining at The Garden Grill, Disney World’s only revolving restaurant.   Don’t worry if you’re one that can’t take the spinning on the tea cups. The rotation is so slow it turns about 1 revolution an hour, so it is almost unnoticeable.

Atmosphere

Overall this is a character experience so don’t think that you and your significant other will be having a nice, quiet dinner.   Though the layout of the round restaurant and the high back table booths cut down on some of the noise, it can get loud as Mickey and friends come around to the tables.

As the restaurant rotates your view will change from the inside of the land pavilion to some of the scenes from the Living with the Land ride.   So if you don’t like your current view just wait a few minutes and it will change.   Listen for the rooster as you go by the farm scene.   Besides the view the atmosphere is not as ornate as you will find in other Disney restaurants.

Food

The Garden Grill is an all you can eat restaurant. Food is served family style with the first rounds coming out quickly after you place your drink order (unlimited fountain drinks are included with the price of your meal).   Your meal will start with warm breads served with sweet maple butter along with a salad.

Adults will enjoy grilled beef strip, turkey breast with cranberry sauce, a fish of the day, fresh veggies, mashed potatoes, and turkey dressing.   Dessert is a fruit crisp (similar to a cobbler) with a vanilla cream.   This can be a welcome experience from a week of fried food and burgers.

Kids can enjoy a chicken drumstick, mac and cheese, broccoli, and crispy sweet potato fries.   Dessert is a cookies and cream moose which both our son and nephew dearly loved on our last trip.   Adults are allowed to steal from the kids plate, just don’t get caught by your kids.

Remember, if you want second helpings, or even thirds just ask and your server will happily get you more.

Overall Rating: (4 out of 5)

Rating Comment:   Overall good food and a wonderful character experience for the kids.   All you can eat but without having to get up from the table and stand in a buffet line.   Let me know what you think and vote on the right.

Rate Dining: Pinocchio’s Village Haus

Location:  Magic Kingdom, Fantasyland
Type: Quick Service
Meals:  Lunch, Dinner
Cuisine:  American
Reservations: No

Courtesy of DisneyWorld.com
For my first dining review I thought I would pick a place that has been operating since Walt Disney World opened.   Pinocchio’s Village Haus.  No, they didn’t misspell House.  It is Haus as in the German version of House.   Even though Pinocchio was set in Italy the architecture is a bit more German.   The theme as you can imagine is straight out of the Pinocchio movie with many of the characters getting their own room.

As you order take a look around the area.   This restaurant has many stained glass windows and a ceiling of lights made to look like you are still outside.   Are you in a small village?   Disney does a great job setting the scene but many of us are usually too busy with picking our food or wrestling our kids to take a moment and just look around.

The main dish here is pizza and Italian sandwiches.  The pizza is available as a combination meal which includes a Caesar salad.   Kid’s meals are also available (Pizza, PB&J, Mac and Cheese, or Grilled Cheese) and don’t forget the cookie.   At first you might think the pizza is average and a little bland but, oddly you'll become addicted to it.  Dessert is Chocolate cake (my recommendation), Strawberry Cheesecake, or Strawberry Yogurt.

Get to the restaurant right when it opens or when it's not busy and you might be lucky enough to get a seat near windows that overlook the load/unload area of It’s a Small World.   Kids love these windows as you can wave to the boats as they enter the ride.   There is also additional seating upstairs where you will find a few tables inside and outside overlooking Fantasyland.  With Fantasyland under construction this is a great vantage point to look over the wall and see some of the new additions.

Tips:  Eat an early (11am) lunch or an early/late dinner (before 4 or after 8).  This restaurant does get extremely busy.    If you are lucky enough to grab a table by the windows, be sure to smile and wave to brighten everyone's day.

DBD Rating 4 out of 5.
Rating Comment:  This is classic Disney when it comes to theme and architecture.  Food is good for counter service locations, just be careful of the pizza addiction.
